Biological Bases of Behavior

My brief description

In this course, you learn about the inner workings of the brain that play a role in everything you do. You look into the inner workings of the eyes, fingers, neurons, and nose, etc. It is really fascinating material. There are also broader topics that are discussed such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. For these topics, we looked into what could be the causes and possible treatments. There was a paper that you worked on all semester and it was of a topic of your choice. My choice was to look into if epigenetics played a role in Celiac Disease.

UNE Course Description

“This course is an introduction to the biological basis of human behavior. The primary systems of human behavior will be examined within the context of the brain’s function. Topics will include the anatomy and physiology of the brain, the structure of the nervous system, the role of hormones, language processing, developmental changes, emotions, and the biological basis of psychological disorders.”

3 Key things I learned:

  • Epigenetics is when genes over many generations are affected by diet and the environment.
  • There is no treatment for schizophrenia that targets the cause of it because the cause is still unknown.
  • There are more nerves in the tips of our fingers then I ever realized.

Sample of Work

When doing this paper I learned more about my condition and different techniques that are used to look into the same condition. I was able to use what I learned in this class to be able to better understand the resources I picked. There are different ways that epigenetics can affect the body which can change how the body can operate. The paper above is an example of how epigenetics does that. This paper was a semester long assignment and is honestly my proudest work in the class. It shows my writing skills, skills I learned in this class, and being able to properly use and cite resources.
